Carnevale - This festival is the revival of the ancient Venetian tradition,
where everyone dresses in masks and costumes. There are costume balls and
fun activities all over the city.  The date of Carnevale varies from year to year,
depending on Easter.  Usually falls in February/March, its the ten days preceding
Shrove Tuesday.

Festa del Redentore - This festival is held in celebration of the deliverance
of the city from the plague in 1576. The Redentore Church on Giudecca was
built also to celebrate it.  Each year a pontoon bridge is constructed over the
lagoon to the church, people make a pilgrimage and the last day of the week
there is a huge party with fireworks, lots of boats and picnics of food and wine.  
This festival is the third weekend of July.

Festa della Madonna della Salute - This is another celebration of a
plague in Venice, this one in the year 1631.  A pontoon bridge spans the
Grand Canal between San Marco and the church so people can make a
pilgrimage to the church to light a candle inside.  November 21 is the date of
this festival.

Volgalonga -  Usually held the first Sunday after Ascension, this regatta
attracts traditional rowers on the Grand Canal for the 22 mile race.

The Venice Film Festival - This twelve day International Film festival
which runs from the end of August into September every year attracts film
stars and directors to the screening venues on the Lido.  There are also
parties all up and down the Grand Canal.

The Biennale - Venice's Art Festival is held in odd numbered years from
June to November in the Biennale Park in the Giardini (Castello). Even
numbered years,  the Biennale of Architecture is held in the same location.

Festa di San Marco - April 25th is the feast day of Venice's patron saint.
his event starts with a mass in St. Mark's Basilica, followed by a gondola race
from Sant'Elena to the Punta della Dogana at the mouth of the Grand Canal.  
It is traditional for men to give their wife or girlfriend a red rose on this day.

Festa e Regatta della Sensa - This is a reenactment of when the Doge
held a ceremony to symbolize the city's marriage to the sea by throwing a gold
ring into the lagoon. Today the mayor throws a laurel wreath, followed by a
costumed gondola regatta.  This is held the Sunday after Ascension Day.

Regata Storica - This event, held the first Sunday in September, is the
largest Venetian water festival of the year.  It begins with a costumed procession
of historic boats down the Grand Canal.  There are boat races in several
categories with big prize money attached.

Su e Zo per i Ponti - This is a fun celebration held late March/Early April
on the Fourth Sunday of Lent.  It's  a day long opportunity to explore Venice's
many bacaros as you follow a route map marked with wine bars "Up and Down
the Bridges".
