Venice is the most beautiful place on Earth and a photographer's paradise;
every square inch is photo-worthy. The purpose of the tour is to help you
improve the quality of your travel pictures, while being guided through parts of
Venice looking for interesting shots.
Although one can get excellent pictures in Venice at any time of day, and
we will schedule the tour at a time convenient for you, there are three times
that give the best results: early morning, late afternoon, and late at night.
Early Morning Photography Tour
In the early morning the light is great, there are few tourists out, people
are arriving on the Vaporetto for work, and men are sweeping Piazzetta
San Marco with the "witch" brooms common in Italy.
Afternoon Photography Tour
In the late afternoon the light is warm and the shadows are long, giving
perfect conditions for taking pictures.
Night Photography Tour
At night all the tourists are gone, and Venice has an entirely different feel to it.
The streets are quiet and uncrowded, and the light can best be described as
interesting, or even eerie. Don't worry, the streets are safe.
What You Get
The number one goal of the tour is to have a good relaxing time walking
around Venice taking pictures at a leisurely pace, while improving the quality
of your pictures. Although there is a path we like to follow, there is no
requirement that we do it all. If you want to stop and spend some time
studying and photographing a subject, it's OK - nobody will rush you to move
on. It's about getting good pictures, not about meeting schedules.
A close second is to help you get great shots. We encourage you to slow
down and look at things you would otherwise miss. Venice is full of fascinating
details; all you have to do is look. Even the bricks on the walls are worth
photographing.
You will get some pointers on how to get good shots, and a few tricks that will
make your pictures vastly superior to the average traveller's. Hopefully you
will learn a few things that will help you get better pictures for the rest of your
life.
Where You Will Go
The path the tour takes changes from time to time, and also depends on the
time of day. Some of the main attractions, such as the Rialto Bridge, can be
choked with tourists at certain times, making it impossible to take decent
pictures. Since we are attempting to have a relaxing time, and to learn
something, we generally keep the tour off the beaten path. Consequently, the
tour may not hit the big touristy places. If there is someplace you would like to
go, let us know and we will try to accommodate you.
The tour is not meant to be a professional level instructional course, but is
meant to help novices and amateurs get better travel pictures. It is also not
meant to teach you how to work your camera. Although Mike may give
pointers on some features, he is not an expert on the operation of all digital
cameras. You should be familiar with the basic operation of your camera.
Point-and-shoot cameras welcome! Don't have any fancy gear? Only a
little ol' digital or film camera? - no problem! You will blow people away with
the pictures you get. So, don't be afraid - take the tour. If you take the night
tour, you should have a tripod, though (but not required).
The tour is Personal and Private. As always, our tours are totally
private, and you will be personally guided on the tour by Mike. The tour
consists of only you and the people you are travelling with. (Contact us if
your group has more than six people).
In Case of Rain: The tour will normally continue rain or shine. If the rain is
too heavy to have a meaningful tour (which is at our discretion), then we will
try to move it to another time or day. If that is not possible, then you will get a
refund in proportion to the time spent on the tour.
